Enterprise AI guides

ChatGPT vs Claude for South African companies

ChatGPT Business and Claude Team are per-seat plans with published prices. ChatGPT Enterprise and Claude Enterprise add SCIM directory sync, and are priced differently. This page puts the plans side by side and sets out which buyer situations favour each.

Every price and policy below comes from the vendors' own pages, with a link and the date we checked it. There is no single winner; the right choice depends on your data, identity and budget needs.

Plans and prices

ChatGPT and Claude prices side by side

The entry plans are priced alike. The Enterprise plans are not: one is quoted by sales, the other has a published seat fee with usage billed on top.

Identity, data and billing

Identity, data residency and billing compared

On both platforms SCIM is Enterprise only, and neither offers data residency in South Africa. The differences are in where data can be stored and how billing works here.

Choosing

Which to choose, by buyer situation

These are our recommendations, based on the facts above. Check each point against the tables before you decide.

Choose ChatGPT when

  • Your data must be stored in a named residency region, and Enterprise's list of regions covers what your policy needs.
  • You want to be billed in rand on a standard paid plan.
  • Your group is larger than Claude Team allows but within ChatGPT Business's seat range, and you want a flat seat price with no usage billed on top.

Choose Claude when

  • You want an Enterprise plan with a published seat fee and pay-for-what-you-use pricing, rather than a negotiated quote.
  • Usage varies widely across staff, so usage-based Enterprise billing suits your budget better than flat premium seats.
  • Your team also builds on the API and would use the pooled API credits included with Team.

Use both when

  • Different teams have measured reasons to prefer different tools, not only personal preference.
  • You can run both behind the same single sign-on, with one written policy on what staff may enter.
  • You have the admin time for two consoles, two data policies and two contracts.

Rollout

Rolling out either platform

We recommend the same six steps for both: pilot scope, identity and provisioning, admin and data policies, user enablement, measuring outcomes, and a scaling decision. Each guide sets out the vendor settings for its platform, with sources.

Test one workflow before you buy seats for everyone

Our AI workflow diagnostic takes about two weeks. It baselines one process, checks data and security feasibility, and ends with a go/no-go decision. It can conclude that you need no AI build at all.
