Background

ConfessionsZA is a South African social mobile app where people share anonymous and attributed confessions, join communities, message friends, and shop a subscription-backed merch mall. App Developer Studio built it for authentic local conversation: a modern feed experience paired with privacy-first posting, discovery, and commerce.

Problem Statement

Most social apps force a choice between visibility and safety. People who want to speak honestly often need anonymity. Communities still need moderation. Brands still need a path to revenue that does not feel bolted on. ConfessionsZA needed all three in one product: a confession feed people trust, communities worth joining, and a mall that supports paid membership without breaking the social core.

Solution

Users register with a cell number and SMS OTP, complete a profile, and land in Trending and Latest confession feeds. They can post text, images, video, voice notes, and polls (including truly anonymous confessions), join or create communities, chat with members, manage friendships, and shop the Confessions Mall. Paid Standard and Premium tiers unlock premium positioning. Settings covers account, notifications, legal pages, and POPIA-aligned account deletion.

See it in action

From Onboarding to the Home Feed

A splash and onboarding panels introduce the product before login. Sign-in uses international cell numbers with a six-digit SMS OTP. Once inside, the home experience centres on confession feeds, search, and a hamburger drawer that links history, wallet, mall, subscriptions, and settings.

Key Features

01

Home feed & engagement

Trending and Latest confession feeds with community filters, search, and rich post cards for text, media, voice notes, and polls. Members like, comment, save, share, and report. Anonymous posts hide authors from peers while staying auditable for moderation.

02

Communities & discover

Discover finds communities by All, Trending, and Latest views. Owners create spaces with avatar, name, and rules. Groups act as topical confession spaces, not separate chat rooms.

03

Connections & social profiles

My Connections organises friend requests across All, Requests, and Friends. Friended profiles unlock fuller bios, joined communities, and chat. Blocking and reporting cover posts, comments, profiles, and DMs.

04

Confessions Mall

A native Shopify-powered catalogue and cart with checkout via Shopify Checkout Sheet Kit. Members browse merch and data bundles in-app, then complete purchase through native Shopify checkout.

05

Profile, settings & POPIA deletion

Profile tabs for All, Favourites, and Anonymous posts, plus edit account. Settings covers notifications, crisis hotlines, legal pages, logout, and POPIA-aligned account deletion that removes PII while retaining anonymised content for moderation history.

Discovery

Communities Worth Joining

Discover helps users find communities and join with a single action. Owners set avatar, name, and rules. Members browse community feeds, profiles, and member lists. Engagement stays confession-scoped, so groups feel like topical spaces rather than another inbox.

Commerce

Confessions Mall

Confessions Mall is a native Shopify catalogue with checkout via Shopify Checkout Sheet Kit. Members browse merch and data bundles in-app, then complete purchase through native Shopify checkout.

Under the hood

Technology & Methodology

Authentication starts with international cell numbers and SMS OTP, with a Forgot Cell recovery path that verifies identity by email then SMS. Commerce runs on Shopify for catalogue, cart, and checkout. Subscriptions and entitlement gates use RevenueCat for Standard and Premium plans. Moderation and privacy sit alongside the social layer: anonymous posts remain auditable, and account deletion removes PII while keeping anonymised content for moderation history.

What we had to solve

Challenges and Solutions

Anonymity without losing moderation

Truly anonymous confessions need peer privacy and operator accountability at the same time. We kept authors hidden from other members while preserving auditable records for report handling and abuse review.

Commerce integrity across Shopify and wallet

Mall checkout and wallet balances had to stay consistent across Shopify and in-app views. We wired native Shopify checkout for purchases and surface orders and store credit in My Wallet so shoppers stay inside the app.

Store-policy differences for subscriptions

RevenueCat powers Standard and Premium on both platforms, but pause behaviour differs by store policy. Android supports pause; iOS hides it. We mirrored that split in the product so subscription UX stays compliant.

What happened

Outcome

ConfessionsZA ships as one native product: social feed, communities, connections, mall, and wallet. Privacy-first posting and POPIA-aligned deletion sit next to real commerce rails, so engagement and revenue share the same product surface instead of living in separate tools.

One app
feed, communities, chat, mall, and wallet in a single native experience
Privacy-first
anonymous or attributed posting, with POPIA-aligned account deletion
Paid tiers
RevenueCat Standard and Premium unlocking premium cues across the product

Future Directions

The same foundation can grow with deeper community tools and richer mall catalogue experiences as the membership base expands. The product stays centred on authentic local conversation, with commerce as a supporting layer.

Conclusion

Confessions shows what a full consumer social app looks like when anonymity, communities, and commerce are designed together. From SMS OTP onboarding to Shopify checkout and RevenueCat tiers, the engineering stays concrete and auditable. #HappyClients

At its heart, ConfessionsZA provides a safe space for people to share their personal stories with over 335K followers — anonymously or openly — and build community through honest conversations.

“Working with Deepa’s team on our Confessions ZA app has honestly been one of the smoothest collaborations we’ve had. From day one, Deepa led with a calm hands on approach that made a huge difference for our team. What really stood out was the patience — we went through the bug sheet together and worked through over 200 bugs, one by one. The app feels seamless now and that’s down to how thorough they were at every stage.

Rob’s oversight across the whole app gave us confidence nothing was slipping through the cracks. Zimvo and Xirmibi went above and beyond by supporting us in person at Confesstival, and Amy was friendly and easy to reach throughout, which made day to day communication so much easier. Marco and Rakhi deserve a special mention too — no matter how much we threw at them or how tight the turnaround, they just got it done properly.

Beyond the app itself, the team helped us understand Google Analytics, Slack and other tools we needed — that wasn’t part of the original scope, but they wanted us set up for success.”
